The University of Hong Kong was founded in 1911 and was opened in 1912 with Faculties of Medicine and Engineering. At the undergraduate level most of the students in the University are from Hong Kong. On the other hand, a sizable proportion of the postgraduate students are from overseas. Today, the University has a student population of over 13,500 and an academic staff population of over 850. Academic staff are highly qualified drawn from Hong Kong as well as from many parts of the world, including the United Kingdom, North America, Australia and several Asian countries.
