Welcome Message

Dear Prospective Students,

Let me take this opportunity to welcome you and invite you to get to know us!

The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering was established in the late fifties as a major department in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Hong Kong. Our graduates have been serving the society since 1961 and have made tremendous impact to the well being and development of Hong Kong. Over the years, power systems, electronics, computer systems and information processing have evolved at a dazzling speed, and have permeated to every aspect of life and the society at large. Nowadays, electrical and electronic engineering is undoubtedly one of the fastest growing and most challenging technologies that propel our society into a knowledge-based economy.

The Department runs four undergraduate programmes, namely Electronic and Communications Engineering, Computer Engineering, Electrical Engineering and Information Engineering. All these programmes are accredited by the Hong Kong Institution of Engineers. Admitting students to our four degree programmes through a common admission policy, we advocate flexibility to the students in selecting any one of the four programmes after admission. Along with common admission, we have designed the first year curricula so that the four programmes share a set of common or equivalent courses in the first semester of the first year. This not only speaks for the fact that the four programmes have a common foundation in electrical and electronic engineering, but also reflects a trend towards a more general approach in engineering education. Furthermore, students in senior years of studies will be offered choices of elective courses from a wide spectrum of topics encompassing computer systems, microelectronics, optoelectronics, wireless communications, networking, multimedia signal processing, information technology, energy conversion, power systems, control systems, biomedical engineering and others.

Currently, the Department has 36 academic and teaching staff and 48 laboratories with advanced equipment and facilities, serving over 400 undergraduates and 100 postgraduates. Our mission is to produce the highest quality of graduates to serve the society, and to conduct leading edge research. Our education philosophy it to equip students with problem solving skills and life-long learning capabilities. We are committed to offer a fertile intellectual ground for our students to freely develop their independent thinking and to fully realize their leadership potentials while studying to become an engineer.

Sincerely,

V.O.K. Li
