The University of Hong Kong
Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering

Notes on Safety Procedures

The Occupational Safety and Health Ordinance (OSHO) has been in effect since June 1997. This Ordinance and its supporting regulations brought safety and health at work in an academic institution under statutory control. Within the University it is the responsibility of all Duty Holders to ensure compliance with the OSHO. These responsibilities of Duty Holders extend from the Council to all levels of University management, from the Vice-Chancellor to heads of departments, centres, and units. A breach of the Regulations by Duty Holders is a serious matter punishable now by a fine and/or imprisonment. Indeed, in the event of a breach of a statutory requirement, not only would the University be corporately liable but also individuals having control over or management responsibilities for work processes are potentially personally liable.
It is the policy of the University to provide the protection of its personnel, attending students, visitors, facilities, and surrounding environment through the development and implementation of a comprehensive safety and health protection programme. The Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering shares the same commitment of the University. All faculty members, office and technical staff, laboratory superintendents, and students in the department will:

In case of emergency, inform the departmental safety staff or the university Safety Office (2859-2400) (Location: Room 103, Chong Yuet Ming Physics Building). If the situation is serious, at once and without delay dial 999 to report to the Police in a safe place.
In the event of power outage so that electronic locks do not work, keys for all the rooms and laboratories can be obtained from Miss Lily L.Y. Lo (phone: 2859-7093) at the General Office (CYC 601). If you cannot get in touch with Miss Lily Lo (e.g., after office hours), please call the EEE Safety Coordinator, Dr. Wallace C.H. Choy, at 2859-8485.
