"Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship in China"

From July 16th to 21st, 2012, The Faculty of Engineering of the University of Hong Kong organized a credit bearing summer program ENGG1903 Innovation, Technology and Entrepreneurship in Shanghai. Forty students from Australia, China, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, UK, US as well as Engineering students from HKU went to Shanghai for a five-day interflow and technical visit.
A series of lectures on various subjects related to innovative technology and marketing were given by Dr. Wilton Fok, which were well received among students both from Hong Kong and abroad. The topics of the lectures vary from the theory of diffusion of innovation, the latest development of the smart-phone market, augmented reality and near field communication to how to use SWOT Analysis in business planning.
The overseas and HKU students also interflowed with local students from Tongji and Fudan University, two well-noted universities in China and exchanged their ideas on technology and culture. Technical visits to Shanghai Science and Technology Museum, Tongji Innovation Park and Fudan Science Park were also organized.
We also collaborate with the Hong Kong Cyberport in this summer program. Before departure to Shanghai, the delegation first visited the Cyberport Entrepreneurship Centre and the Technology Centre in Hong Kong to acquire an general understanding of this operation. During the time in Shanghai, the group also visited the Cyberport Shanghai Rep Office and the Knowledge and Innovation Community. A multinational technology company called EMC. The delegation were impressed but the nice working environment and their advanced operational system.
In the Knowledge and Innovation Community, the students were required to present a business plan of an innovative and technological business. Many innovative ideas such as mobile apps for taxi and hotel registration, 3D polarize transitional contact lens, smart watch for health monitoring, digital wallet...etc. were proposed. They were inspired by one and other and many groups determined to start their entrepreneurial business upon their gradation. The representatives from iCamp, a venture capital investor from the Silicon Valley who also attended the presentation, were impressed by the their performance and invited them to start their business in Shanghai.
Before the departure day, a closing dinner was hosted by the Hong Kong Cyberport for the delegations and interns from Hong Kong to interflow and share their learning and working experience in Shanghai. On the way to Pudong International Airport before they went back to HK, the students visited the Shanghai Maglev Museum to learn more about the operation mechanism and development of such an innovative transportation tool - the magnetic train. Not only impressed by the speed of the 430km/h Maglev train, the students also amazed by the high speed of technology development in China.

The CEO of iCamp was in Beijing during the visit. He logged himself on a robot called Anybots and talked to the delegates through the robotic body, though his real body is in Beijing. The delegates were very impressed by such amazing and innovative idea.
