Gallium Nitride materials/ device design, modeling, processing and characterization

Anthony Choi joined the department in 2004 after postdoctoral training with Prof. M.D. Dawson at the Institute of Photonics, University of Strathclyde in Glasgow, UK. He studied electronic engineering at the National University of Singapore between 1994 and 2001. His PhD work was performed at the Centre for Optoelectronics under Prof S.J. Chua on plasma processing of GaN materials, obtaining his doctorate in 2003. In Glasgow, Dr Choi carried out pioneering development work on GaN-based emissive micro-light-emitting diode arrays, demonstrating applications in the areas of micro-displays and high-efficiency light sources.

At the Semiconductor Lighting and Display Laboratory, Dr Choi leads a team of researchers investigating frontier research topics including solid-state lighting, GaN micro-cavities, fiber-coupled micro-displays and 3D laser micromachining. His major contributions include using fluorescent microspheres for white light LEDs, design and implementation of a stacked polychromatic LED structure, emissive nitride microdisplays and pivoted GaN-on-Si microcavities amongst others. He has published over 100 papers in leading journals and international conferences, contributed to 2 book chapters, filed numerous US and PCT patents and is actively involved in professional activities, such as serving as chairperson for the international conference LEDsAsia 2009.
