Postgraduate MSc(Eng) in Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EnergyE)

[2012-2013]
(applicable to students admitted in the academic year 2012-2013 and thereafter)

The Master of Science in Electrical and Electronic Engineering Programme has three different streams: General Stream, Communications Engineering, and Power Engineering. Each candidate is required to follow a prescribed course of study comprising 12 modules, out of which the candidate has to pass at least 8 modules selected from the modules listed below. To qualify as a graduate of the Communications Engineering Stream, the candidate must pass at least 6 modules in the Communications Engineering subject group. To qualify as a graduate of the Power Engineering Stream, the candidate must pass at least 6 modules in the Power Engineering subject group. For General Stream, the candidate can freely choose from the three subject groups below. Subject to approval, candidates can select to undertake a project (ELEC6021) and in which case, General Stream candidates are required to pass at least 5 modules selected from modules listed below, while candidates pursuing Communications Engineering and Power Engineering Streams are required to pass at least 4 modules in their respective subject groups.

Projects Information

If you are interested in taking MSc projects offered by the EEE department, you are invited to visit the following link, http://intranet.eee.hku.hk/mscproject/projlist.asp, which will be updated by approximately Sept. 16 each year.

You can then contact directly appropriate colleagues for more details. Alternatively, you can contact directly potential colleagues for self proposed projects.

If both the supervisor and student agree to work on a given project, you should fill in an application form, download here or available from Ms. Danita (danita@eee.hku.hk) in the general office, and forward it to the department.

Please note that you can also enroll the "project" course online at the second semester and therefore there is no hurry for freshmen.

The project may last for one year or slightly longer time. You are also required to submit a thesis and give an oral presentation at the end of your project for assessment (normally, the project marks will be considered immediately after the teaching period at each semester. For final year students, the deadline however is April 30.  Please refer to the regulations for more details.).

Scheme A training

We are given to understand that the HKIE has decided, with immediate effect, that for engineering graduates from UK (and Ireland in near future), their registration for the HKIE scheme "A" training requires a satisfactory completion of a MSc thesis prior to the registration. This follows a recent change in the qualification requirements of IET (formally IEE).

Thus for UK graduates who are interested in joining the scheme "A" training of HKIE, or wish to apply for a full HKIE membership, please clarify your current status with the HKIE. The clarification may help you to assess your needs in enroling for a project in your MSc studies.

Should you have any queries, please feel free to contact us (email:
msceng@eee.hku.hk).
