We host the Strategic Research Theme of Information Technology at the University of Hong Kong, and research funding is provided by the University, the Hong Kong Government, via the Area of Excellence Scheme, the Innovation and Technology Fund, and the Research Grant Council, by the Croucher Foundation via the Chinese Academy of Science-Croucher Funding Scheme for Joint Laboratories, and by industry. We have established research collaboration with various research laboratories and institutions from around the world, and our research students have held visiting appointments at Microsoft Research, MIT, and Cambridge University.
Our research is in the design, analysis, and deployment of systems for the transmission and processing of multimedia information. It is multi-disciplinary and include such diverse topics as Internet technologies and applications; social networks; network security; resource management for wireless networks; smart grid; ad hoc networks; sensor networks; all-optical networks; optimization techniques; queueing theory with applications to performance modeling of networks and computer systems; distributed computing; peer-to-peer computing and networking, mobile computing; operating systems; compilations systems; parallel computing; grid computing.
