Edmund Y. Lam — Study and Research Opportunities

Post-doc Openings

Application is invited for:

  • one post-doc position in image synthesis for optical lithography, and

  • one post-doc position in optical imaging and biophotonics (together with Dr. Kenneth Wong).

For the first post: The candidate should have a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering, or equivalent (such as mathematics and physics). Experience in computational lithography is desirable, but not mandatory.

For the second post: The candidate should have a PhD in electrical and electronic engineering, or equivalent (such as physics), and should have experience in optical coherence tomography system. He or she should also be familiar with general image processing operations (e.g. edge detection, compression), discrete Fourier transform computations, digital filtering, inverse problem, regularization, and optimization formulation and solution. Matlab programming is also needed.

Qualified candidates please email me, and put in “Post-doc Opening 2011” as the subject line. Appointment may be made for up to three years, and renewable upon satisfactory performance. Remuneration will be competitive and commensurate with experience.

Graduate Student Openings

Admission to the 2011–12 academic year has been finalized. Currently all spaces have been taken up.

We plan to recruit one graduate student in the 2012–13 academic year. Both Master and PhD applicants are welcome. International students are particularly invited to apply.

The admitted student will be given full studentship (scholarship), with stipend sufficient for living expenses and tuition. They can also participate in the competitive Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme, where the selected fellows will receive approximately USD 2,600 per month in addition to travel support. (Note that the deadline for this scheme is likely earlier than normal admission, around early December.) If you can get into this competitive scheme, I am currently working out the arrangements so that (provided you are interested) you can spend up to a year as a visiting scholar at either Stanford University or MIT during your PhD study.

The research work will center on computational imaging, particularly image reconstruction and synthesis. Currently we have work in semiconductor manufacturing (optical lithography) and optical imaging (digital holography and optical coherence tomography), but may extend to related areas such as computational photography. You can check the research work of the group at http://www.eee.hku.hk/isl. We also welcome proposals from students regarding different areas of research.

To apply, you need to have a bachelor’s degree in electrical and electronic engineering, or equivalent (such as mathematics), by August 2012. A Master degree would be a plus for PhD applicants. You should apply directly to the University through the Graduate School, but if you are interested in working in the above areas, you should put my name as the proposed supervisor and computational imaging as the proposed study area, and I will consider your applications further.

If you have specific questions regarding the openings, you can email me, but remember to put in “Graduate Student Openings 2012–13” as the subject line so I know it’s not a computer-generated mass email.
