CCST9003 Everyday Computing and the Internet

Course Description:

In order to make informed decisions in this information age, everyone needs to have an efficient way to sift through and evaluate the myriads of information that is available through the Internet. The ultimate objective of this course is to help students develop a "computational" state of mind for everyday events. Specifically, the course will enable students to answer the following questions: What daily problems need to be solved by a computational method? Are such problems solvable? By what means can such problems be solved? Is it worthwhile to compute such problems? How do all these problems relate to the Internet that we use on a daily basis? We will also discuss intensively the societal impacts of computing technologies on our daily life. The course will be taught with minimal levels of mathematical and technical detail.

(Posted on Fri Nov 4 22:47:23 HKT 2011): On November 19 (Sat) in the morning, the class will have a Technical Visit about High Performance Computing (HPC). Specifically, there are two sites for you to choose from:
- (1) HKU Computer Center, Main Campus, Pokfulam Road
- (2) Hong Kong Observatory, Tsim Sha Tsui, Kowloon
Both visits will start at 10am and last until 12:30pm. Accordingly, there will be NO class and NO tutorial on November 19. By the way, please also note that the tutorial sessions from November 21 to November 26 will be used for Group Presentations. Please indicate your preference by using the form. The deadline for submitting this form is on November 12 (Saturday) at 5pm. If you do not submit the form, we will assume you have no preference. Important: Option [2] (i.e., HK Observatory) can only accommodate a limited number of visitors, and thus, if there are too many students choosing this site, we will use a random allocation method. Thank you for your kind understanding. More details (e.g., meeting place and schedule) will be made available in the week of November 14.

- (1) There will be NO tutorial on Oct. 28 (Fri). The three affected tutorial sessions will be moved to Nov. 4 (i.e., next Fri).
- (2) There will be NO lecture and NO tutorial on Oct. 29 (Sat).
- (3) Accordingly, there will be NO tutorial from Oct. 31 to Nov. 4 (except for the make-up mentioned in (1) above).
- (4) Normal lecture/tutorial schedule resumes on Nov. 5 (Sat).

Accordingly the tutorial sessions scheduled on Saturday are also canceled. As next Wednesday (Oct. 5) is also a public holiday, the tutorial session on that day is also canceled. After careful consideration of the scheduling problems, we have decided to cancel all tutorials from Oct. 1 to Oct .7, i.e., there will NOT be tutorial in the coming cycle. Tutorials (and lecture) will resume on Oct. 8. Please mark you calendar and make good use of the extra time to produce better 1-page surveys and 3-minute talks.
