The leading research platform in clean energy & environment (CEE) interdisciplinary study in Asia.

Mission //
Our mission is to provide a strategic and effective platform to enable scholars and students from HKU and the University of Cambridge to collaborate in interdisciplinary research on CEE, to engage industry so research results are relevant, and to engage citizens and the government to facilitate the implementation of policies to benefit the public.

One of the grand challenges of the 21st century is to overcome the problems of climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions. HKU has taken the lead in addressing this challenge by establishing the Initiative on Clean Energy and Environment (ICEE) in 2008, and our efforts have been quite successful, resulting in major grants on Sustainable Energy (USD 6M), LED (USD 2.5M), and Smart Grid (USD 0.7M). Our interdisciplinary focus has also led to research grants on Nuclear Safety Contingency Governance in China (USD 0.4M), and Technology Empowerment via Smart Energy Management (USD 0.17M).

Strategic Alliance //
To have impact on the world, we need truly interdisciplinary efforts, so that our proposed solutions will be better understood and supported by the public and the government. We are working with Energy@Cambridge as a strategic partner. Not only is Cambridge the major international centre in this area, but it is also strategically connected with other major research centres in Europe and North America. Therefore, we collaborate with Cambridge with the goal of establishing the leading research platform in CEE in Asia.

AI for Social Good: HKU-AI WiSe Team Wins Gold and Silver Medals at Inventions Geneva 2025

The HKU-AI WiSe team, led by Prof. Victor OK Li and Prof. Jacqueline CK Lam from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE), Faculty of Engineering, is honored to express our deepest gratitude to the Head of the EEE Department, the Dean of the Faculty of Engineering, and HKU TEC for their invaluable support. Their backing enabled us to become the only team led by full-time HKU Engineering professors to win both gold and silver medals at Inventions Geneva 2025.

Our achievements include the DeepDrug project, awarded the Gold Medal in the Medical Track, and the UMeAir project, which earned the Silver Medal in the Protection of Environment/Recycling Track. These awards reflect our commitment to the mission of AI for Social Good. Our team’s innovations, developed with the expertise of AI researchers from the HKU EEE Department, stem from research projects bolstered by four consecutive US NAM HLCA awards and a competitive RGC-TRS award, in collaboration with Cambridge University and Tel Aviv University.

Are the Socially Deprived Exposed to More Air Pollution in Hong Kong? HKU-Cambridge CEERP reveals air pollution-induced environmental injustice

Poor air quality can result in extremely detrimental health consequences, such as cancer, stroke, asthma or heart disease [1, 2]. Interdisciplinary research conducted by the HKU-Cambridge Clean Energy and Environment Research Platform (HKU-Cambridge CEERP) revealed that there is a statistically significant, positive relationship between ambient PM2.5 (Particulate Matter of width 2.5 microns or less) concentration and the Social Deprivation Index in Hong Kong, and showed the existence of air pollution-induced environmental injustice at the constituency area level in the territory.

In Dec 2017, HKU and Cambridge, under HKU-Cambridge Clean Energy and Environment Research Platform, has finally reached a MOU to kickstart a PhD pathway, which allows HKU PhD students registered under our HKU-Cambridge CEERP Programme to undertake a one-year MPhil programme in Technology Policy at the Judge Business School, the University of Cambridge.
