Abstract

Talk concerns experimental aspects of optoelectronic oscillators (OEO) based on intensity modulation and a high quality factor disk resonator. OEOs are microwave photonics systems intended to generate ultrastable radio-frequency (RF) signals with low phase noise performance. Crystalline whispering-gallery-mode resonators act both as a frequency filter for selection of the microwave oscillating frequency, and as an optical storage element. Such systems are relatively compact and allow efficient temperature control. Laser can be locked on the resonance by Pound Drever Hall technique or by alternative crystalbased acousto-optic cells. An instrument was developed at the laboratory by using a double delay line optoelectronic system operating at 1.55 μm wavelength and designed for OEO phase noise characterization. Phase noise is then determined and the global uncertainty of this system is calculated.

Biography of the Speaker:
Patrice Salzenstein (b. Paris 1970) holds a Master and engineering diploma (Lille’93) and a PhD degree in Electronics (University of
Lille’96). Between 1996 and 2001, he worked near Paris successively as a technology research engineer at THOMSON-CSF LCR (Thales-TRT), microwave engineer at ALCATEL and head of the RF and time & frequency group at LCIE private research laboratories. Since 2001, he has been working for Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) at FEMTO-ST institute in Besançon, France. He managed a calibration lab. (phase noise and short term stability of frequency) in 2002-2012. Now his interest is optoelectronic oscillators for microwaves photonics applications as a CNRS Senior research engineer. He authored and coauthored 20 articles in international peer review journals.
