Current c-plane GaN technologies are approaching their maturity and also exhibit a number of fundamental limitations. Therefore, further development of GaN technologies needs a major breakthrough. Semi-polar/non-polar GaN exhibits major advantages in a wide range of photonics and electronics which c-plane GaN cannot achieve. Therefore, the semi-polar/non-polar GaN technologies could be one of the most promising solutions forward. This talk will present the major challenges which c-plane GaN cannot address but semi-polar/non-polar GaN can potentially meet. The current issue for semi-polar/non-polar GaN is due to their crystal quality on a large scalable wafer which is far from satisfactory. Finally, the talk will present the latest development in Sheffield in terms of epitaxial growth.
Biography of the speaker:
Tao Wang is a Professor (with Top Professor Grade) as Chair in Advanced Opto-Electronics in Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering, the University of Sheffield, the UK. He is Director of the Sheffield Centre for GaN Materials and Devices and co-Director of the Joint Research Centre for Wide Bandgap Optoelectronics. He received his Ph.D from Universität Würzburg in Germany in October 1997. He started III-nitrides research at the University of Tokushima in Japan in November 1997, and then worked at Nitride Semiconductor Ltd. in Tokushima as the R & D director from 2000 to 2002. He joined the University of Sheffield in August 2002. He was awarded the honorary “Chang-Jiang” Professor by the Ministry of Education of China in 2003, the “Outstanding Overseas Young Scientist Award” by the National Natural Science Foundation of China in 2006, the highly prestigious “EPSRC Advanced Research Fellow” in the UK in 2005, and the prestigious “Overseas Expert” awarded by the Chinese Academy of Science in 2018. He co-founded Seren Photonics Ltd., the III-nitride semiconductor company in the UK, which was awarded the “Royal Society Emerging Technology Award” in 2015. He is regularly involved in organising international conferences including the Chair of 16th International Symposium on the Science and Technology of Lighting in 2018. He initiated and chaired the 1st China-UK workshop on GaN Materials and Devices. He has > 420 publications including 5 book chapters, >220 journal papers and >200 conference papers/presentations. He holds 20 patents in the UK, USA, Japan and Europe. He regularly serves as a Referee for Research Councils in the UK, Germany, Canada, Israel, Poland and Hong Kong of China. He also regularly serves as a Referee for many international scientific publishers.
