The volume of machine-type communication devices (e.g., sensors) is expected to be massive and widespread worldwide to support various upcoming 5G-and-beyond applications. Thereby, spectrum- and energy-efficiency should be some of the most prominent building blocks for the design of such systems. Energy harvesting (EH) via wireless power transfer can be used for enabling perpetual operation of wireless devices where connectivity rather than high throughput seems to be of prime importance. On another front, cognitive radio (CR) has emerged as one of the most promising technologies to resolve the issue of spectrum scarcity. Consequently, CR and EH can be jointly utilized to achieve the above goal due to their complementary benefits. Motivated by the general interests towards green communications in emerging and future wireless systems, green cognitive relaying systems with EH capabilities will be presented. In this talk, we will highlight that the trade-off between sensing time and transmission/harvesting time duration is not a trivial problem. Furthermore, simultaneous spectrum sensing and data reception, effective number of transmit antennas and harvest-transmit trade-off for spatial multiplexed MIMO CR communication systems will be introduced as key requirements for energy-efficient CR systems. Finally, we will summarize some new results on interweave CR schemes for out-band EH systems.


Biography of the speaker:

Theodoros Tsiftsis was born in Lamia, Greece, in 1970. He received the B.Sc. degree in physics from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, in 1993, the M.Sc. degree in digital systems engineering from the Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, U.K., in 1995, the M.Sc. degree in decision sciences from the Athens University of Economics and Business, in 2000, and the Ph.D. degree in electrical engineering from the University of Patras, Greece, in 2006. He is currently a Professor in the School of Electrical & Information Engineering at Jinan University, Zhuhai, China. He has authored or co-authored over 150 technical papers in scientific journals and international conferences. His research interests include the broad areas of cooperative communications, cognitive radio, communication theory, wireless powered communication systems, and optical wireless communication systems. Dr. Tsiftsis acts as a Reviewer for several international journals and conferences. He has served as Senior or Associate Editor in the Editorial Boards of the IEEE Transactions on Vehicular Technology, IEEE Communications Letters and IEICE transactions on Communications. He is currently an Area Editor for Wireless Communications II of the IEEE Transactions on Communications and an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Mobile Computing.
