Renewable energy resource (e.g., solar power and wind power) has become a significate energy resource in power system nowadays, since it provides cheap and clean electricity to power systems. Renewable energy has the potential to cause a significant impact on power system reliability and stability since its production is easily influenced by ever-changing environmental conditions. The study focuses on the influence of renewable energy on power system reliability and stability, and the research has two topics: 1. applying probabilistic power flow (PPF) algorithm based on cumulants to evaluate the influence of renewable energy uncertainty on power system reliability; 2. applying the Probabilistic Collocation Method (PCM) to evaluate the impact of the renewable energy uncertainty on power system dynamics. Both methods are computationally efficient techniques and can significantly reduce the computational burden compared with traditional Monte Carlo simulation. Besides, this study also considers the generation dispatch operation into PPF algorithm to balance renewable energy uncertainties and makes the uncertainty results more realistic. Furthermore, this study also applies uncertainty analysis into economic dispatch and optimizes the expected value of the total generation cost with the overload probability as a constraint.


Biography of the speaker:
Dr. Miao Fan is a senior software engineer at Siemens Industry Inc., NY since 2013. Dr. Fan is IEEE Senior Member and plays a key role in supporting power flow calculation, AC contingency analysis and voltage control functions of PSSĀ®E software. He is also involved in developing and maintaining dynamic models. Dr. Fan received the Ph.D. degree in the electrical engineering from Arizona State University, in 2012, and the B. S. and M. S. degree in electrical engineering from Tsinghua University, China, in 2007 and 2009. Dr. Fan has published more than 10 papers in IEEE Transactions and international conference proceedings, and he got the award of Best Conference Paper at IEEE PES General Meeting 2019. Dr. Fan is the vice president of North America Chinese Power Professional Association (NACPPA). Dr. Fan has been invited frequently to serve as a reviewer for the field’s top journals and international conferences, and he was nominated as the IEEE Transactions on Power Systems Outstanding Reviewer and IEEE Transactions on Smart Grid Best Reviewer in 2015. His research interest area is in power system reliability analysis, contingency analysis and renewable energy integration. All are welcome.
