EEE has nominated two projects, one in the Tertiary Student Category and one in the Open Category, for the HKICT Award. Both projects have reached the Final (or 3rd) Judging Round which was held at the Cyberport on Oct 28.
Digital Photo Frame with 3D Features – Finalist in the Open Category
A digital photo frame (DPF) is an electronic device which can display pictures on an Liquid Crystal Display (LCD) screen, and usually has music and video playback capabilities. According to IDC, a subsidiary of IDG (the world’s leading technology media, research, and events company), over five million units will be sold worldwide in 2007, and the market is expected to reach 50 million units by 2011.
We have developed both the hardware and software of a DPF with 3D features based on the Zevio1050 chip from Magnum, a US-based company. The unique feature of our DPF is that we can render 3D images, a feature not available in any of the DPFs on the market. This prototype was exhibited at the Innovation Expo organized by the Innovation and Technology Commission in September 2007, and at the Hong Kong Electronics Fair organized by the HK Trade Development Council in October 2007. An updated prototype will be exhibited at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in Jan 2008. This project is one of the finalists in the HK ICT Award, and Prof. Victor OK Li made a presentation to the Judging Panel at the Cyberport on Oct 28 2007. Dr. Dongxu Shen, Dr. Guanghua Yang, and Dr. Wenjian Shao were at the Expo to explain the project to visitors. The result of this competition will be announced in Jan 2008. This project has also been nominated as one of the projects to represent Hong Kong in the Asia Pacific ICT Award Competition to be held in Singapore in November 2007.
Peer to Peer Interactive Video-On-Demand System – Finalist in the Tertiary Category
The Peer to Peer Interactive Video-On-Demand (P2PIVOD) system is an interactive video-on-demand system that uses the patented Split-And-Merge (SAM) protocol to share video objects over the Internet. It consists of the registration index site and the peer nodes. The peer nodes publish and find video objects at the index site. The peer nodes share objects by peer-to-peer streaming. The unique feature of the P2PIVOD system is that it supports interactive VCR-like functions such as fast forward, rewind, jump forward, etc. This project was led by Prof. Victor OK Li and Dr. Philip Tse and Safyaia Yu(BEng(CE)) and Adrian Chu(BEng(InfoE)) made a presentation to the Judging Panel at the Cyberport on Oct 28 2007. The other students that participated in this Final Year Project are Stanley Ng(BEng(CE)), Yuki Tam(BEng(CE)), and Winston Tang(BEng(InfoE)).
