BEng CE final year students received the start-up fund from HKSTP, turning their project into business

Have you ever thought about your initial idea in your project or course assignment can turn into reality? Here is a successful story from two of BEng Computer Engineering (CE) students.

We just got the good news from our CE final year students, Chi Ping Desmond WONG and Kwong Yat Felix WONG! They are selected by the Science and Technology Entrepreneur Programme (STEP) with their project “Lumino” and will be receiving a start-up supporting seed fund of HK$100000 and one year support and co-working space from HKSTP (Hong Kong Science and Technology Park)!

Two years ago, Desmond and Felix came up with an initial idea of making something like a digital “guide dog, white cane” to help visually impaired people. Then the idea further developed from the knowledge that they have learned in the courses ELEC 3641 – Human Computer Interaction: Design & Programming and ELEC3442 Embedded System. This is how they started the “Lumino” project.

Through the preparation of competitions, Desmond and Felix got much useful advices from their supervisor Dr. Vincent Tam and their programme director Prof. Edmund Lam. They have got excellent results in the competitions within and outside HKU, namely:

Second Prize – Collegiate Computing Contest: Mobile Application Innovation Contest (co-organized by Zhejiang University and APPLE)

Youth Innovation Award: Best Creative Idea Finalist-  SG Digital Wonderland 2019 (organized by IMDA Singapore )

Best Project Award: ELEC3442 Embedded System – 1st Engineering InnoShow (organized by Faculty of Engineering, HKU)

As Desmond and Felix are final year now, apart from preparing their final year project, they are also planning for their future career. With the start-up seed funding support from STEP, it will be a good start for them to make their ideas into reality! 🙂
