A team of 20 engineering students studying Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering joined the Sichuan reconstruction project jointly organized by the HKU Faculty of Engineering and the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China (UESTC). This project was supported by the China 1000 Exchange Program. The team went to Chengdu, Deyang and Yingxiao in Sichuan from 4 Jan to 10 Jun 2018 and served the two reconstructed schools. The PC lab environment, which was built by the former engineering students in the last few years, were upgraded with STEM education facilities. Electronic teaching materials on coding and computational thinking were installed in their computer lab and our engineering students served the schools by being STEM tutors and teach the local teachers and students knowledge on computer programming.
The delegate also visited the Sichuan Science and Technology Museum, panda incubation base, the Sichuan and HK Youths’ Innovation & Entrepreneurship Centre and the UESTC Artificial Intelligence and Robotic Laboratory. This experiential learning mission was very successful and students gained not only an experience but also friendship with students in Sichuan.
