Biography

Dr. Tam received his Ph.D. degree from the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering in the University of Melbourne in 1998 for his unprecedented work on integrating local search based constraint solvers into constraint logic programming. During his Ph.D. candidature, Vincent was awarded with 3 scholarships and also a fellowship for attending the Logic Summer School in the Australian National University. His Ph.D. research project was directly supported by an Australian Research Council (ARC) approved research grant, and also initiated two other large-scale research projects for its applications. From 1998 - 2001, he was an academic fellow in the Department of Computer Science in the National University of Singapore (NUS) where Vincent was the winner of the Innovative Teaching Award - 2000 among 80+ academic staff in the School of Computing (SoC), NUS. He is currently a Principal Lecturer and also Honorary Assistant Professor in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, the University of Hong Kong. Within the department, Dr. Tam has been serving as the Director of Course Enrolment since 2004. In 2011 and 2013, Vincent received the Faculty Best Teacher Award and Faculty Outstanding Teaching Team Award in the Faculty of Engineering, the University of Hong Kong.

Dr. Tam has over 100 internationally refereed publications, including 10 book chapters and 15 journal papers. His main research interests include big data analytics, computational finance, cloud/mobile computing, machine learning, Internet of Things (IoT) and real-world applications, and information visualization. Besides, Dr. Tam is interested to apply the latest wireless and computing technologies for developing educational software and their sound applications in e-learning. Dr. Tam collaborates with various research/development centers in educational technologies including the Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL), Center for I.T. in Education (CITE), the EDB, the HKEdCity, the Microsoft Research Asia, the Apple Asia, and some local schools. In addition, Dr. Tam is active in serving various international conferences as technical program committee members, Publication Chair, Publicity Chair, and Workshop Chair, and also editors/reviewers for reputable journals since 2000.

Vincent serves as an Executive Board member of the IEEE Technical Committee on Learning Technology (TCLT), the Chairman of the IEEE (HK) Computational Intelligence Chapter, and the Vice-Chairman of the Senior Common Room (SCR @ HKU). Besides, he is a Senior Member of the IEEE (SMIEEE) and a Faculty Member of the IEEE Eta Kappa Nu Lambda Iota Chapter. Furthermore, he is listed in the Marquis's 9th Edition of "Who's Who in Science & Engineering" (September 2006 and 2007), Who's Who in World (2007) and "Who's Who in Asia" (Premier Edition, December 2006).
